I try to talk a bit about the Pikemen in this game, mainly they are an early game unit, you generally start of with a few, have limited ability to train more (they can only be trained in provinces with the most basic administrative building) but until you have bayonets they are better in hand-to-hand fighting than your Line Infantry, but after you do have bayonets the Line Infantry can fight just as well and the Pikemen will get obsolete (as the Line Infantry can also shoot which is something the Pikemen obviously can't).
